Chevron, Algonquin to develop 500 MW of renewables
Chevron Corp. has announced that it intends to source more than 500 megawatts of renewable electricity for its operations, Kallanish Energy reports.
Its Chevron U.S.A. Inc. subsidiary has signed a four-year agreement with Algonquin Power and Utilities with headquarters in Oakville, Ontario, to co-develop the renewables.
The electricity will go to strategic assets across Chevron’s global portfolio, the company said.
The companies did not address what percentage of the projects might be wind and how much might be solar or hydro.
“Chevron intends to lead in the future of energy by developing affordable, reliable and ever-cleaner energy,” said Allen Satterwhite, president of Chevron Pipeline and Power, in a statement.
“This agreement advances Chevron’s commitment to lower our carbon footprint by investing in renewable power solutions that are reliable, scalable, cost efficient and directly support our core business,” he said.
Initial renewable projects are expected to be sited on Chevron land with construction likely to start in 2021
The projects will be focused in the Permian Basin of West Texas and New Mexico, along with Argentina, Kazakhstan and western Australia, it said.
Projects will be jointly owned and co-developed by the two companies.
Algonquin will lead the design, development and construction of the projects. Chevron will purchase electricity through power purchase agreements.
500 megawatts is enough electricity to power about 400,000 U.S. homes.
Algonquin has more than 2 gigawatts of installed renewable energy in its portfolio.
