EU gas consumption falls 5% in Q1 2020: European Commission
New figures from the European Commission (EC) show that gas consumption across the European Union (EU) decreased to 131 Billion cubic meters (Bcm) in the first quarter of 2020.
Within its Quarterly Report on European Gas Markets, published on Friday, the EC recorded that gas consumption across the EU fell 5% year-on-year, due to a combination of warmer weather and the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic, Kallanish Energy reports.
The decrease in Q1 2020 reversed the trend of increasing consumption in the EU, which rose by 7% and 2% year-on-year in the previous two quarters respectively.
Gas production across the EU totalled just under 16 Bcm during Q1 2020, representing a sharp 23% decrease year-on-year.
The Netherlands recorded the largest decrease in production during the period, going from 10.6 Bcm in Q1 2019 to 7.2 Bcm in Q1 2020, a year-on-year decrease of 33%.
The EC said that the drop in production points to a “points to increasing gas import dependency, which is expected to rise further after the withdrawal of the UK.”
Net gas imports in the EU also decreased during the first quarter of the year, totalling 81 Bcm, a year-on-year drop of 7%. Russian pipelines were the main source of extra-EU gas imports during the period, accounting for 40%.
Liquefied natural gas (LNG) and Norwegian pipelines accounted for 28% and 24% of total EU gas imports during Q1 2020 respectively.
