India posts 46 percent drop in April fuel usage

Officials said on Sunday that the fuel usage in India saw a decline of about 46 percent in April as the demand over petroluem goods has decreased due to the nationwide lockdown imposed by the government in order to curb the spread of coronavirus.

The Indian Petroleum and Planning Analysis Cell of the Petroleum and Natural Gas Ministry released data showing that the fuel usage in the country declined 45.8 percent to reach only 9.93 million tons of consumed fuel this April in comparison with 18.32 million tons consumed in April of 2019.

The officials have observed the drop in 12 categories of fuels used in the country.

According to the government data, fuel consumption during March this year stood at 16.08 million tonnes.

The fuel demand plunged in the last week of March after the government announced the lockdown, which resulted in the suspension of travel and economic activity.
