Baker Hughes: Canada drops 77 rigs for the week

Canada dropped 77 rigs for the week ended Mar. 20, according to Baker Hughes data. With 98 rigs running, the count is down 7 from the 105 units drilling this week a year ago. The number of oil-directed rigs in Canada decreased by 63, bringing the count to 52 rigs for the week. Gas-directed rigs were down 14 units to 46.

The US drilling rig count, meanwhile, fell 20 units to 772 rigs working for the week. The count is down 244 units from the 1,016 rigs working this time a year ago.

At 751 rigs working, 20 fewer units were drilling on land week-over-week. The number of offshore units remained unchanged at 19 units for the week. The number of rigs drilling in inland waters remained unchanged at 2 rigs working for the week.

US oil-directed rigs dropped 19 units from last week to 664 units working, down from the 824 rigs drilling for oil this week a year ago. Gas-directed rigs were down a single unit to 106, and down from the 192 units drilling for gas a year ago.

Among the major oil and gas-producing states, Texas saw the largest decrease in rigs with an 11-unit drop to reach 397. New Mexico dropped 5 rigs to reach 112 and Oklahoma saw a 3-unit drop to 43. North Dakota dropped a single rig to reach 50 rigs drilling for the week.

Nine states were unchanged this week: Louisiana, 47; Pennsylvania, 24; Colorado, 21; Wyoming, 20; West Virginia 15; California, 12; Alaska, 10; Ohio, 9; and Utah, 7.
